These are great. Slightly hard to get on and off if your proportions are small waist to larger hips. Wish the fly opened wider for easier access. Otherwise - very happy with the sizing and quality!

I've loved my 400s for many years so I was delighted to see the surfnyl were finally restocked after several years of being sold out. I purchased the new blue color and was excited to get them in. I was disappointed to find that the fit is way off from the originals. The waist is nearly impossible to get on and once on, the hips flare out larger and they go up almost to my rib cage. They also came with a cheap white shoestring string style lace, no more cord and it's nearly too short to tie. Why change perfection? I'm glad they last as long as they do because I will have to stick with my old ones. These are not flattering or comfortable at all. The best I can say about them is the original material seems to be there.

The quality is still there but I was disappointed in the new cut. I've always loved the originals. The new ones are high rise with smaller waist making them hard to get on and off. They also came with a small, cheap white shoestring for the waist tie instead of the original corded tie. I didn't like the fit on me at all. I may have overlooked it but I saw no mention of a new cut of the same style sold for many years. The sizing is hard to choose now. Used to have to go up a size, now you go down one to get the hips to fit but the waste is smaller and rise too high. . Why change the best and most popular style and try to fix what's not broken? Disappointed long time customer. These are the same size. See pics.

Shorts were great and delivered super promptly!

I swim every other day in a chlorine pool, and the surf nyl fabric persists, even drying in the brutal Tucson sun. You do need a bit of a wiggle to get the shorts on if you're hourglass-y. But somehow the cute sassy cut doesn't betray your modesty whilst going commando. . . my go-to shorts!

These shorts were bell shaped - fit tightly in the waist and belled out at the thigh - making them really unflattering (and definitely not as pictured). A bigger size may have beem more comfortable in the waist - but I presume would have flared out even more in the leg. The fabric has ZERO stretch. It's the same fabric as an outdoor flag - stiff. Not something I want on your body.

I wanted to love these as they are so cute in theory but the fit is just not it. Too short in the back, too baggy in the crotch and not as comfortable / versatile as I would have hoped at this price point.

I have contacted several times. The shorts where too big. I have not heard back but would like to exchange. There is a 30 day return policy but nobody answers request

Ordered a size 2 and was smaller than expected. Customer Service was non-responsive. Surprised with the lack of responsiveness considering the premium pricing.

I was first introduced to Birdwell 50 years ago. I purchased a male and female shorts as a birthday present for my neighbor. They have 5 small children and already the children are wanting a Birdwell for themselves. They are the Rolex of swim shorts.

I love my women 400 Boardshorts - navy. We moved in to a new house with a pool and they are perfect for hanging at the pool.
I would suggest ordering 2 sizes up, so you get them comfortably over your lady hips :)
Birdwell reminds me of when I was a kid in Virginia Beach and all of the our preppy boyfriends and brothers wore them.

This is the 3rd pair of Birdwell boardshorts I've bought. the quality is fantastic. But the style of these is different from the images. They sit higher on the waist and flare out wider at the bottom of the short than shown online. The pocket is also narrower than before (I can fit my cell phone in the pocket of the others but not in the pocket of the 400s). If there wasn't such a cost to return them, I would do so.
