Dazzling Blue #121: Surfing in the Time of Coronavirus with Wingnut

03.25.2020

Surreal times. We hope you’re doing okay out there. For this installment of Dazzling Blue I reached out to Wingnut. Wingnut has made several appearances on the Birdwell feed in the past, but in case you’re not familiar with him, he’s an ace longboarder, an intrepid traveler, a five-star surf instructor/coach, and a helluva lot of fun. He starred in “The Endless Summer II,” and features in many surf flicks. Wingnut lives with his family in Santa Cruz. I wrote him the kind of note we’re all familiar with right now: Hey Wingnut, How you doing through all this? What are you doing to stay sane and healthy? He wrote back the following—

Hi Jamie,

Doing great up here. I was scheduled to be home till April 27 with a visit to Newport to see Mom—that visit is off. But other than that, sort of normal for me. Working in yard/garden. Getting my SUP fishing rig all sorted out—will start early this year for sure.

Surf has been tiny but our beaches are open.

I take our fifteen-and-a-half-year-old dog, Star, to the beach park four to five times a day. It’s a five-minute walk, perfect for her.

I have a good veggie garden going. Figured out a good home yoga routine, thanks to downdogapp.com. We have a few neighbors in their 80s and 90s so we are helping them with anything/everything. It’s cool to have been in the same house for 27 years. We literally know everyone in the hood.

The real question will come at the end of April.

Costa Rica has closed its borders to all non-residents. For how long?

I have a Fiji trip in late June. No Covid-19 there…yet. So, will that trip be on or off?

I know flights will be cheap and empty to most destinations.

So it’s just a matter of when we will be allowed to travel to the foreign beaches again.
